VietNam – Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh meets with President Joe Biden, attends a white house banquet

The Prime Minister affirmed that Vietnam will actively contribute to enhancing ASEAN-U.S. relations for peace, stability, cooperation and sustainable development of ASEAN countries and the United States, the region and the world.

On the evening of May 12 (local time), Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and leaders of ASEAN countries attended a reception hosted by US President Joe Biden at the White House.

President Biden expressed his pleasure and pleasure to welcome asean leaders, seeing this as a great opportunity for the parties to jointly evaluate and guide ASEAN-U.S. relations. In particular, this event took place at a meaningful time, the two sides celebrated 45 years of relations.

The leaders agreed that ASEAN-U.S. relations have developed dynamically and strongly over the past 45 years, overcome many challenges and achieved many important achievements in cooperation in all fields from politics – security, economy – trade, culture – society and development cooperation. Both ASEAN and the United States affirmed their importance to each other’s role as well as the importance of the ASEAN-U.S. partnership for peace, security, cooperation and prosperity development in the region and the world.

President Biden affirmed his appreciation and desire to elevate ASEAN-U.S. relations and pledged to support ASEAN’s centrality and asean view of the Indo-Pacific (AOIP).

The U.S. president announced a package of initiatives worth more than $150 million to attract the private sector to invest billions of dollars in collaborative projects in areas such as trade-investment exchanges, supply chain stabilization, health capacity building, maritime cooperation, infrastructure development, education, human resource development, energy, climate change response, sustainable development.

Asean leaders highly appreciated and expected the United States to continue active cooperation, build with ASEAN to promote dialogue, cooperation and join hands to effectively handle challenges in the region. ASEAN also hopes that, besides the economy and trade, the two sides will expand cooperation in many new areas such as green economy, circular economy, digital transformation, sustainable energy transformation, response to non-traditional security challenges such as epidemics, climate change …

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh highly appreciated the significance of the conference, clearly demonstrating the commitment of the two sides to accompany towards peace, stability and shared prosperity. Looking back 45 years, the United States, the world’s leading power and ASEAN, the region with the most dynamic developed economy, have coordinated very actively in the spirit of respect for the rule of law and the central role of ASEAN, thereby building a foundation for trust, building an open regional structure, transparent, inclusive and based on international law.

At the same time, economic, trade and investment cooperation has developed strongly and is a link between people’s friendship. The Prime Minister affirmed that this is the right time for ASEAN and the United States to discuss new and better development milestones.

Sharing about the orientation of bilateral relations, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized that maintaining peace and maintaining stability must be considered as the top concern of both ASEAN and the United States.

The Prime Minister expects the United States to always support ASEAN to play a central role in the processes in the Asia-Indo-Pacific region; to contribute to building new directions for cooperation frameworks chaired by ASEAN, creating a balanced and harmonious environment in the region; asean dialogue sincerely on the basis of trust and responsibility, supporting the settlement of differences and disagreements, based on peaceful measures, in accordance with international law, the UN Charter and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia.

Emphasizing the need to restore trade and investment flows, create momentum for the next phase, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh affirmed that Vietnam will apply the best measures to support US investors and businesses, quickly expanding business in the Vietnamese market, Connect with the asean market full of potential.

The Prime Minister also asked the United States, with its experience and resources, to support ASEAN in green and sustainable development, economic restructuring, technology application, digital transformation, renewable energy development, environmental friendliness, and accelerate comprehensive and sustainable recovery efforts. ASEAN also expects the United States to promote cooperation initiatives within the Framework of the Mekong-U.S. Partnership, contributing to ensuring the quality of development and supporting equitable and sustainable development in the region.

In the face of the complex impacts and consequences of non-traditional challenges, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized the need to build a global approach in solving global problems.
